三善晃、石島正博による解説では「なぜ、そこに、その音を、そのように書いたのか？」ということを、自筆譜やさまざまな資料を可能な限り検証し、丁寧に解説します。深い洞察と詩情に富んだ文章は、ラヴェルが音に託したメッセージを惜しみなく読む人に伝えてくれます。
また、ラヴェルに関わった人びとのこと、友人たちへの手紙、写真、ラヴェルが生きた時代を切り取った年譜もついており、この一冊で充分に背景を学べるように出来ています。
