ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Both in her native city, Caracas, and her new home, Athens, OH, Laura has gained remarkable experience teaching private piano lessons and group piano classes to children, precollege and college students. She has performed as a soloist and has collaborated with multiple vocal and instrument soloists, choirs, a variety of ensembles, and orchestras. She has created the Piano Ensembles Project and has written several music arrangements for this format, some of which have been published by Piano Safari and TimeWarp.
Her work at Ohio University has varied from piano group classes for music majors, collaborative pianist of choirs and studios, to lecturer of General Ed classes of Introduction to the Arts. She has also developed her teaching at the Athens Community Music School, for which she has taught piano, piano ensembles, and other introductory classes in Summer Programs.
She is an advocate of new music and music by lesser-known composers. She has premiered numerous works for piano solo and chamber music by composers such as Juan Manuel Sánchez, David Longa, Ángel Hernández-Lovera, Jorge Díaz, Ricardo Teruel (Venezuela), Ryne Siesky, Matt Dowler, Dave Davenport, and Bobby Lucas (USA), among others. Some of these works have been her commissions.
In Caracas, she worked for Mozarteum Caracas, Colegio Emil Friedman, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, Camerata Barroca de Caracas, and the UNESCO awarded network El Sistema. One of her main roles at El Sistema was as the orchestral pianist for the Sinfónica Juvenil Teresa Carreño. She has participated in multiples choral and orchestral tours in USA, Europe, and Asia as well.
She holds degrees from Ohio University (Masters of Piano Performance and Pedagogy), in which she has studied under the tutelage of Christopher Fisher, Universidad Simon Bolivar (Masters of Piano Performance) in the studio of Abraham Abreu, Universidad Central de Venezuela (Bachelor of Psychology), and Conservatorio Nacional Juan José Landaeta (Piano Performance Diploma), under the tutelage of Carlos Urbaneja. She has also pursued music studies at Escuela Superior de Música José Ángel Lamas, Escuela de Música Mozarteum Caracas, Ars Nova, and has joined numerous festivals y masterclasses of piano and baroque music (harpsichord and organ) in Venezuela, USA, France, Spain, Portugal, and Finland.
Laura loves contributing to the communities in which she is immersed. As a Venezuelan living abroad, she currently conducts research on the cultural impact that the massive migration her country is experiencing in the twenty-first century manifested in contemporary piano works. And she serves as president of the Southeast District of the Ohio Music Teachers Association.
