Description

Book 2 includes two brand-new pieces, the Débutante Grand Valse and the Peacock Grand Valse, as well as the Russian Bells Étude-Tableau that first appeared in International Piano Magazine in November 2016, and the Arabia Étude-Tableau which was released in 2014 and is frequently performed by young pianists at such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. To offer performers the best direction for their interpretation, the editors have given detailed instructions for pedalling, dynamics and articulation. Suggested fingering may be amended to suit the needs of the individual pianist.

Débutante Grande Valse by Elena Cobb is written in a traditional Romantic waltz form and will appeal to piano players at the advanced level or Gr 7-8 ABRSM. It offers a variety of technical challenges and will be a very attractive piece to include in the recital performance programme or A Level Music exam. A Débutante is a girl or young woman of an aristocratic or upper-class family who has reached maturity and, as a new adult, comes out into society at a formal “debut”.

Arabia Étude-Tableau for piano is a modern Romantic piece with an Oriental feel. It evokes a fleeting memory of a train journey I took with my parents across the desert as a child. Filled with flamboyant octaves, it will offer a great opportunity for a young virtuoso to show off his skill as a performer.

Russian Bells, La Petite Étude-Tableauis a Romantic-style miniature for late intermediate level by Elena Cobb. One will be forgiven for thinking that the Étude is filled with triumphant chords that mimic the great cathedral bells of Russia. That is not the case as the piece contains only one bar at forte!

Peacock Grande Valse

Romantic style piece that features some technical challenges. The Peacock Grand Waltz (late intermediate/advanced level) includes octaves and double thirds in the right hand and other delightful hallmarks of a virtuoso piece.
